20 Photo Themes
Seeing the everyday in a new way...

As with photo essays, photo themes are a series of related pictures... visually exploring the variety that certain subjects offer. However, there is a noticeable difference. With photo essays you are usually trying to tell a story about someone - or something with a human interest angle... whereas with photo themes you can treat your subjects in an inanimate and generic way by seeking out and photographing a link between them. The link may be tenuous at first glance - like a combination of colors - but there will be a common element somewhere thus categorizing the images and forming a photo theme.

Photo themes are wide and varied and can be of anything, as I will show on these pages. Some of them are not too difficult to seek out and twenty examples can be assembled in a day. Others may take years to find and photograph... the choice of subject is yours, but you may have to live with the difficulty in finding them if you make a bad choice.

Below the links, which I will add to regularly, I have listed a selection of other themes I collect... some have been completed whilst others are still being worked on and only time will tell if I finish them. But I don’t want to start again with other themes simply because they are easier to record - that is the wrong attitude and not a very positive way to open one’s eyes!

20 Chimneys
Trish and I adopted a more comfortable way of life... but the huge open chimney - with its 95% heat loss factor - ruled our lives to a certain extent. It needed feeding with logs constantly...
20 Front Doors
The front door is both a safety feature and a comfort... a barrier across the threshold of your personal domain which you can choose to open to go out into the world, or open to let the world in...
20 Numbers
This is the subject that started me off collecting odd shots and out-takes which eventually grew into a theme. But finding interesting numbers from one to ninety-nine isn’t as easy as counting sheep...
20 Post Boxes
The Badminton Post Office in Gloucestershire has a simple slit in the stone wall of the post office bearing only the inscription “Letter Box” in faded lettering... and that in a village on a Royal estate!
20 Stone Walls
Asked by a publisher for as many different examples of regional building materials as I could find... I asked myself just how many types there could possibly be? The answer was never quantified... but it was a lot!
20 Stripes
From my examples you will see that stripes don’t have to be straight... or parallel. They can be curved, angled, zig-zag, random, converging, wavy, even crossing or interlacing with each other as a chequered or diamond pattern...
20 Tractors
The farm tractor, like the railway engine, is high on the “I want to drive one” list secretly written by boys and grown men alike. They are seen far more often than steam locos though... but are just as absorbing.
20 Tri-colors
The three color combination of red, white and blue make an interesting and dynamic theme for a photographic subject. I see them everywhere and they have been almost like a magnet to my camera and lens for years...
20 Wheels
Sometimes a detail will do... just the axle and spokes will tell the viewer what it is. Look around and you will see all kinds of wheels worth photographing... the technology sure is here to stay!
20 Windows
The two fathers of photography, William Henry Fox Talbot and Nicéphore Niépce, both featured windows in the first images they created. Let’s look at what this subject can offer as a theme for your curiosity and camera...

Still to come are several "photo themes" including...

Breads (French... a tasty theme)
Car Number Plates (personalized to make words or names)
Chairs, Benches & Tables (from cafes to public parks)
Gates (garden, field, factory)
Shop fronts (big or small... open or closed down)

Some are completed whilst others are missing just a few shots to make a presentable set of twenty. However, when I reach twenty examples I sometimes edit out ones I don’t like any more, which is all part of the fascination of thematic collections... so it may take a long time to complete this page!
